Academic Senate of the University of Medicine, Tirana

The Academic Senate is the highest collegial body of the University of Medicine, Tirana (UMT). It is composed of 21 members, including the Rector (Chair), 18 representatives of the academic staff, and 2 student representatives (10%). Academic members must hold the title of “Professor” or the academic degree of “Doctor” (PhD), obtained from universities in OECD or EU member countries.

Mandate and Replacement

The mandate of the Senate is four years. It ends upon the expiration of the term, resignation, termination of employment with UMT, six consecutive unjustified absences from Senate sessions, or a final court conviction. Vacancies are filled according to the ranking of candidates in the vote or, in their absence, through new elections.

Main Competencies

• Proposes to the Ministry of Education and Science the opening, reorganization and closure of study programs.
• Determines the admission criteria and quotas at UMT, as well as the registration and tuition fees.
• Approves the institution's cooperation agreements and contracts.
• Approves the establishment of new academic units and research centers.
• Selects the members of the Ethics Council and approves its regulation.
• Establishes permanent commissions for important academic matters.
• Proposes commissions for the evaluation of academic titles, etc.

The Academic Senate exercises its competencies through decisions with direct effect.
