History of the Faculty of Technical Medical Sciences

The history of the Faculty of Technical Medical Sciences dates back to 1921, with the establishment of the first Nursing School by the Albanian Red Cross in Tirana. This school focused on preventive medicine and hygiene. Over the years, professional training expanded with the opening of technical schools and specialized courses for nurses and medical assistants.

In 1996, by decision of the Council of Ministers, the school was elevated to higher education level as the “Higher School of Nursing,” offering a 3.5-year study program in the “General Nursing” profile. Later, programs in Midwifery, Speech Therapy, Laboratory Technology, and others were also introduced.

In 2004, a decision was made to transform this school into the “Faculty of Nursing” under the University of Tirana, consolidating academic structures with dedicated departments and integrating programs into the 3+2 system according to the Bologna Charter.

Following developments and the expansion of study profiles, in 2012 the faculty was renamed the “Faculty of Technical Medical Sciences.” A year later, with the establishment of the University of Medicine, Tirana, the faculty became a constituent unit of the new university.
