Academic Senate

Academic Senate of the University of Medicine, Tirana

The Academic Senate is the highest collegial body of the University of Medicine, Tirana (UMT). It consists of 21 members, including the Rector (chairman), 18 representatives of the academic staff and 2 representatives of the students (10%). Academic members must hold the title of “Professor” or the scientific degree “Doctor” (PhD), obtained at universities of OECD or EU member countries.

Mandate and Replacement

The Senate's mandate is four years. It ends in the event of expiration of the term, resignation, termination of the relationship with the UMT, unjustified absences in six consecutive sessions, or conviction by a final court decision. Vacancies are filled according to the order of candidates in the vote or, in their absence, through new elections.

Core Competencies

• Proposes to the Ministry of Education and Science the opening, reorganization and closure of study programs.
• Determines the criteria and quotas for admissions to UMT, as well as registration and tuition fees.
• Approves the institution's cooperation agreements and contracts.
• Approves the opening of new academic units and study centers.
• Selects the members of the Ethics Council and approves its regulations.
• Establishes standing committees on important academic issues.
• Proposes committees for the evaluation of academic titles, etc.

The Academic Senate exercises its powers through decisions with direct effect.
